Nutrition myths debunked

Working in holistic health, I encounter a lot of nutrition misinformation. Here are some common myths I'd like to address:

Myth 1: Detox diets cleanse your body

Your liver and kidneys already do an excellent job of removing toxins. Most "detox" products have no scientific backing. A balanced diet with plenty of water, fibre, and vegetables is all the "detox" you need.

Myth 2: Superfoods can replace a balanced diet

Açaí, goji berries, turmeric — they're wonderful foods, but no single item is a magic bullet. A varied diet consistently trumps any one ingredient.

Myth 3: You need supplements if you eat well

For most people eating a diverse diet, supplements are unnecessary. Exceptions include vitamin D in northern climates, B12 for vegans, and specific deficiencies identified through blood work. Always test before supplementing.

Myth 4: Carbs are the enemy

Complex carbohydrates — whole grains, legumes, root vegetables — are essential fuel. The problem is refined carbs and excess sugar, not carbohydrates as a category.

What nutrition myths have you encountered? Let's discuss!

Great list! I'd add Myth 5: "Eating fat makes you fat." Healthy fats from avocados, nuts, olive oil, and fatty fish are essential for hormone production, brain function, and nutrient absorption. The low-fat craze of the 90s did a lot of damage.

The detox myth drives me crazy. I spent hundreds on juice cleanses before realizing my body was already handling things perfectly well. Now I just focus on eating whole foods and staying hydrated. Much cheaper and more effective!
