Meditation apps vs. real practitioner?

I've been using Headspace for about a year now. It definitely helped me build a daily meditation habit, which is great. But lately I feel like I've hit a plateau.

Has anyone worked with an actual meditation practitioner or attended guided group sessions? Is there a noticeable difference compared to just using an app?

I'm curious about the cost too. The app is about 60 CHF/year. How much do in-person sessions typically run?

I made the switch from app-only to a combination of both about six months ago. The in-person sessions (about 80 CHF per hour where I go) really helped me break through a similar plateau. The practitioner noticed things about my breathing pattern that no app could catch.

Both have their place! Apps are fantastic for building the habit and daily maintenance. But a real practitioner can tailor techniques to your specific needs and offer corrections. I recommend trying a group session first — they're usually cheaper (30-50 CHF) and give you a taste of what guided in-person practice feels like.

I tried both Headspace and Calm, and eventually moved to guided sessions at a local center. The energy in a room full of people meditating together is something an app just can't replicate. Hard to put into words but it's worth trying at least once.

Honestly, I still prefer the app. It fits my schedule better — I meditate at 6am before the kids wake up and there's no way I'd make it to an in-person session that early. But I can see how a practitioner would help if you're feeling stuck.

What really changed things for me was when my Reiki master introduced breathwork meditation. It's quite different from the mindfulness-focused approach most apps use. Maybe explore different meditation styles? That might break the plateau without needing to spend more.
