I love that more people are discovering aromatherapy, but I'm seeing some concerning practices online. Let me share some essential safety guidelines:

Never do this

  • Never apply undiluted essential oils to skin — always use a carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond, coconut)
  • Never ingest essential oils unless under professional guidance
  • Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes
  • Keep away from children and pets — cats in particular are very sensitive to many oils

Dilution guidelines

  • Adults: 2-3% dilution (12-18 drops per 30ml carrier oil)
  • Children (6-12): 1% dilution
  • Elderly or sensitive skin: 1% dilution

When in doubt, consult a certified aromatherapist. The internet is full of bad advice on this topic. Your safety comes first!

Thank you so much for this! I had no idea about the cats thing. I've been diffusing eucalyptus at home and I have two cats. Going to research which oils are safe for them immediately.

This should be pinned! So many social media "experts" recommend drinking lemon essential oil in water. It's scary. I once burned my lip because I applied peppermint oil without diluting it first.

OP

Maria — yes, please be careful! Eucalyptus, tea tree, and peppermint are among the most toxic for cats. Lavender and cedarwood at very low concentrations and good ventilation are generally considered safer, but best to diffuse in rooms where your cats don't spend time. And Lisa, ouch! That peppermint burn is so common. Glad you're okay now.
