Sleep issues are one of the most common concerns I hear from clients. Before reaching for supplements, I always recommend starting with sleep hygiene basics, but when those aren't enough, certain herbs can make a real difference.

My go-to herbs for sleep support

  • Valerian root — The classic. Works best when taken consistently for 2-4 weeks. Start with a low dose.
  • Passionflower — Excellent for racing thoughts at bedtime. I often recommend it as a tea.
  • Lemon balm — Gentle and good for beginners. Combines well with chamomile.
  • Ashwagandha — More for stress-related insomnia. Helps regulate cortisol levels over time.

Important: Always check for interactions with existing medications. Valerian in particular can interact with sedatives and anti-anxiety drugs.

What herbs have you tried? I'd love to hear what worked for you.

Passionflower tea has been a game changer for me! I drink a cup about an hour before bed and the difference is noticeable. I used to lie awake for hours with my mind racing.

I tried valerian for a month but the smell was really off-putting. Switched to lemon balm capsules and they're much more pleasant. Do you think the effectiveness is comparable, Elena?

OP

Great question, Katharina! Lemon balm is milder but can be effective, especially for mild sleep issues. Valerian is stronger but you're right — the taste and smell aren't for everyone. If lemon balm works for you, stick with it. You could also try combining it with chamomile for a synergistic effect.

Thanks for the tip about drug interactions. I'm on anxiety medication and had no idea valerian could be a problem. Will definitely talk to my doctor before trying anything.
