TCM and modern medicine — can they coexist?

I've been using Traditional Chinese Medicine for about three years now — acupuncture, herbal formulas, and dietary therapy. My Western doctor knows about it and is supportive, but I know not everyone has that experience. Some doctors dismiss TCM entirely, while some TCM practitioners discourage conventional treatments. I think both sides have valuable contributions. TCM excels at prevention, chronic conditions, and treating the whole person. Western medicine is unmatched for acute care, diagnostics, and surgery. Why can't we have both? I'd love to hear from people who integrate both approaches, or from practitioners who work across traditions. What does integrative medicine look like in practice?

This is such an important topic. In my practice, I always encourage clients to maintain their relationship with their conventional doctor. Holistic care shouldn't mean abandoning evidence-based medicine — it means adding tools to the toolkit. The best outcomes I've seen are when both sides communicate openly.

As someone trained in both TCM and Western physiotherapy, I can confirm they complement each other beautifully. I use acupuncture alongside manual therapy regularly. The challenge is institutional — many hospitals and insurance companies still don't recognize TCM. That's slowly changing, especially in Switzerland where complementary medicine has constitutional protection since 2009.

I think the key issue is communication. When I started acupuncture, I didn't tell my GP because I was worried about judgement. Turns out she was totally fine with it and even asked about the results. Being open with all your healthcare providers ensures nothing conflicts and everyone can work together.

I use herbal medicine alongside my prescribed medication, and my pharmacist actually helped me check for interactions. That's integrative medicine at its best — using traditional knowledge with modern safety checks. We need more practitioners who can bridge both worlds.
